U.S. Army Rangers from the 2nd Ranger Battalion were tasked with capturing and disabling the German six-gun 155-mm coastal defense battery at Pointe du Hoc, located about three miles west of Omaha Beach, France. On June 6, 1944, Lieutenant Colonel James E. Rudder led his men on this mission, considered nearly impossible. Despite an initial error in landing calculations, the Rangers, with support from naval gunfire, bravely fought their way up a sheer cliff approximately ten stories high. Once at the top, they continued battling German forces, who frequently emerged from craters connected by tunnels. The Rangers suffered a 70 percent casualty rate, with 77 Rangers of the 2nd Battalion killed and 152 wounded, out of a total of 225. Reinforcements from the 1st Battalion, 116th RCT (Regimental Combat Team), arrived the next day. By 11:30 on June 8, Pointe du Hoc was under Allied control.
The Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument was erected by the French to honor the brave Rangers who died during the assault.
