The Netherlands American Cemetery is the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands. It lies near the historic Cologne-Boulogne highway, used by figures like Caesar, Charlemagne, and Napoleon. In May 1940, Hitler’s troops advanced along this route, and in September 1944, German troops used it for withdrawal.
8,288 American service members are buried at this sacred site. Another 1,722 are memorialized on the Tablets of Missing.
“Unique to the cemetery is the connection with the Dutch people. Since 1945 members of the local community have adopted the grave sites of our fallen. They bring flowers to the cemetery and research the life of the service member as a way to honor their sacrifice.” – American Battle Monuments Commission
